The Stone Center of New Jersey was the first facility in the United States with a bathless lithotripter, and the first center devoted to providing extracorporeal shockwave lithtripsy (ESWL) in the northern region of New Jersey. The Stone Center of New Jersey opened its doors in October of 1987. The Stone Center of New Jersey was the first of its kind- an unprecedented alliance between two of New Jersey's most prestigious health care institutions: the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), the only medical school in the state and Saint Barnabas Health Care Systems (SBHCS), the state's oldest and largest hospital system. In 2000, The Stone Center is located on the Newark- UMDNJ campus and is one of the most successful facilities in the country. It ranks among the top five in volume in the United States. The Stone Center is licensed by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. The Center is also accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). In addition, The Stone Center is a certified training site for Urologists to acquire ESWL certification. More than 100 Urologists throughout the United States, including the Urology residents from UMDNJ, have been Certified at The Stone Center. The Stone Center is an outpatient facility which offers ESWL, LASER, lithoclast and other endourological procedures for the treatment of kidney stones. Over 20,000 patients have been treated in the last 18 years. Our Medical Staff brings together 145 Urologists from 40 area hospitals and 30 Anesthesiologists from eight counties of New Jersey: Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, Union and Warren are represented by its staff Urologists.
